In 2008, the Stephen Lewis Foundation supported more than 200,000 children in Africa. We fund grassroots organizations that are providing counselling, care, continuity through education, healing through creativity and that are helping children affected by AIDS to foster a sense of community and belonging.
The children of Africa will inherit the next chapter in the AIDS pandemic and they will lead the continent out of the crisis. With the Turning the Tide Campaign, we hope to reach one million children, strengthening their networks of support and giving them the tools they need to become future leaders.
Join the Campaign and support children affected by AIDS.
Within the next five years, we will:
- Reach a million of the most vulnerable children (including girls, children with disabilities and children heading households) in the countries hardest hit by the AIDS pandemic.
- Create the Orphan Future Fund. The fund will support projects that work on every aspect of children's lives — from school fees, uniforms and feeding programmes, to psychosocial support for grieving and traumatized children, to ensuring that girls have an equal chance to attend school, learn how to protect themselves from the virus, and flourish.
- Create an effective network of orphan care projects to share successful strategies and cutting edge ideas, bringing the voices of children and youth to the forefront.
STEPHEN LEWIS: CHILDREN AFFECTED BY AIDS
project Highlight:
In just eight intense years, Consol Homes Orphan Care in Malawi has leapfrogged from a tiny preschool centre to a vast network of 107 child care centres serving 30,000 children in 1,200 villages. Working with 500 community volunteers, Consol Homes regularly conducts home visits, distributes food packages, pays children's school fees, and provides spaces for thousands of children to come together to play, learn and work through their grief. Through Consol Homes' peer-elected youth councils, young people learn the skills to become leaders. |
