Toronto, Canada — Ms. Jackie Flanagan, founding editor of Alberta Views, a monthly magazine, has contributed one million dollars to the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) to be used "on behalf of the women of Africa." The donation was made through the financial conversion of shares.

“We are filled with admiration and gratitude for this remarkably generous gift,” said Ilana Landsberg-Lewis, Executive Director of SLF. “It’s immensely encouraging when people come forward in this fashion.”

The designation of the money for women in Africa strikes a particular chord for SLF. An estimated 13.3 million women are living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa – 59% of the total number of infections in that region. The Foundation already supports significant numbers of HIV/AIDS projects for women, ranging from girls’ education, to the struggle against sexual violence, to the grandmothers who sustain entire communities of children orphaned by AIDS.

“Ms. Flanagan’s contribution will make a huge difference in the lives of women and girls. It will dramatically expand our support to dozens of grassroots organizations in sub-Saharan Africa,” explained Ms. Landsberg-Lewis.

The donation will be used to provide medical supplies and train nurses who bring care and dignity to women who are struggling with HIV/AIDS. The funds will enable training for community workers who wash, feed, and comfort women in distress. An estimated 90% of AIDS care is provided at home, often by older women. Funds will also go towards educating family members about proper care for those infected, as well as counselling them on how to deal with stigma and discrimination in their communities.

Ms. Flanagan is well-known in the Alberta community: amongst other philanthropic ventures, she helps to fund the Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme at the University of Calgary. “Now she has added an international humanitarian dimension to her impressive range of philanthropy,” said Ms. Landsberg-Lewis.

The Stephen Lewis Foundation helps to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa. Since it was established in 2003, it has funded over 170 projects in 14 sub-Saharan African countries.
