SLF SENDS EMERGENCY FUNDS TO KENYA:
It is with great sadness that we continue to hear from our partners in Kenya of the growing unrest in their midst. Some 300,000 persons have been displaced across the country — the majority of whom are women and children. People infected and affected by HIV and AIDS are faced with added hardship. Although the Stephen Lewis Foundation is not an emergency relief organization, when the safety and continuity of services of our project partners is threatened, we are committed to responding as quickly as possible to meet their needs. |

SLF is funding 32 grassroots projects in Kenya and we are in regular contact, via phone and e-mail, with project staff on the ground. In response to the impact of violence and civil unrest on the community-level organizations we support, SLF has distributed more than $125,000 in additional funds to five projects, with more emergency funding applications coming in — and more money going out — every day.
With support from SLF, our Kenyan partners will: provide trauma and rape counselling for women; provide food and nutritional supplements; provide temporary shelter; arrange transport to healtcare facilities; relocate students to safer schools; supplement income-generating projects; provide soap, sanitary towels, clothes and mosquito nets; and replace office supplies — and even offices — that have been destroyed by looting and fire. Read more here about SLF's efforts to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Kenya.
