Important clarification regarding March 3, 2007
Globe & Mail article on David Reiner

On March 3, 2007, The Globe& Mail ran an article called "Broken Trust" by reporter Peter Cheney. The article focused on David Reiner, a bookkeeper who allegedly stole $800,000 from daycares across Toronto. We are deeply disturbed by this and extend our sympathy to the daycares whose trust was allegedly violated by Mr. Reiner.

Since the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) was mentioned in the article, we would like to provide important information that was omitted from the Globe article:

  • David Reiner was a consultant bookkeeper for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. We terminated his consultancy with us in 2005. No funds are missing from the Stephen Lewis Foundation — we have had two independant audits since Reiner's departure, and have determined that our funds are and always have been secure.
  • All of our audited statements are available on the CRA website. For more information on our financials, click here.
  • We have participated fully in the police investigation and have provided them with all necessary documentation. Our Director of Programmes, Alexis MacDonald, immediately turned over to the police David Reiner's inappropriate email messages to assist them in tracing his whereabouts. We also alerted our African project partners to ensure they knew Mr. Reiner was no longer working with the Foundation.
